What does a stay at home mom do all day?

I often wonder what other stay at home moms do during the day. Is that weird?

I am just curious (maybe a little nosy too) about how much TV they watch or how much art and crafts they do ( because we do not do a lot of that unless a holiday comes around, we just color a lot).  I wonder if they have a cleaning house schedule or home school their kids for a few hours everyday. I imagine they do some laundry, cooking and maybe re-organizing the house from time to time (or is that just me).

What does a stay at home Mom do all day?

Do y’all spend hours at the park on a nice day or inside watching movies all day when it is raining (of course we watch movies all day when it rains and definitely stay outside all day when it is nice). I genuinely would like to know what other SAHM’s do during the day.

Getting ideas on what other moms do at home can also help spark ideas when we get cabin fever or get in a SAHM rut.

When you stay at home it is easy to not go anywhere all day, at least for us. There are some days though that we have to get out of the house for the sake of my (and the kids) sanity. I can always tell when we have spent too much time at home. Harper will get really hyper and run around everywhere or beg me to go to Target (that girl loves some Target, but so do I so what can I say she got it from me) or ask me a million times what we are doing today.

Most days we are at home. I am constantly cleaning something or doing things around the house while the kids play. TV is usually on but the kids are usually playing so much rather than just “sit” and watch so I really don’t mind it.

So really though, is there such a thing as a right stay at home mom schedule? Everyone leads different lives and has different interest so I think it just depends on your family and what you like to do.

Harper loves the park so we usually go several times a week.  We also run errands some days, we will just go out and do what we need to and play the day by ear, and by ear I mean as long as the one year old will let us after all we are all on his time for at least the next 2 years.

With Harper having started Kindergarten I imagine we will have way more of a consistent routine. We had a pretty good one this past year after I started staying home and it seemed to work for us. My only fault was not waking up before the kids. I definitely took advantage of the kids sleeping until 7:30-8 and woke up when they did most mornings. Sometimes Harper would come in and lay down with me after Eric leaves and Nic would wake up too and we would all snuggle in bed. It was our little morning snuggle time.

Don’t get me wrong I do think about those hours I can have before they get up. Coffee and breakfast  in silence, maybe an uninterrupted work out, or get a few chores done BUT  I love my sleep! Plus I usually stay up later than everyone else so I get my TV or Computer time in silence. Plus I am not having to make snacks every hour or see what little man is off getting into, it’s crazy how fast he is and what he messes with, which is everything.  He is going to be my little trouble maker and definitely will break some bones in the future.

My SAHM Schedule

So if you are like me and wonder sometimes what others do this is what our days looked like before school started. Which will now be referred to as Summer break in the future. Also, this is a timeline with (ish) added to all times ( I like to add ish to a lot of words especially when I am referring to a time) by no means do we stick to this exact schedule, at all.

7:30 – 8 Wake up

8 – 9 Make Bed, TV show while breakfast gets ready

9 – 10 Clean up Kitchen while Harper does some schoolwork – Usually a page from a K Workbook or writing letters

10 – 11 Depending on the day we would go to the park, walk, story time at the library or run errands or just play at home

11 – 12 Nicolas Naps while I cleaned or showered and got lunch ready – Harper quiet time play quietly or watch TV

12 – 1 Eat lunch then clean up kitchen while Harper does another Workbook page or color Nic runs around and plays while stopping every time Paw Patrol songs come on

1 – 2 Play or or watch something educational like Super Why, or Wallykazam

2 – 3 Nic naps – Quiet or movie time

3 – 4:30 Movie or Free Time to play watch TV or play game on tablet (usually a little of all that) Daddy comes home – YAY!

4 – 5 Start dinner kids play with Daddy

5 – 6 clean up dinner and make Eric lunch for next day, sit outside watch kids play or play inside

6 – 7 Bathtime change into pajamas

7 – 8:30 TV, Movie or play family game ( Nic goes to bed at 8)

8:30 Harper brush teeth and go to bed

8:30 – 12am-ish  FREEDOM then bedtime

So that is about what our days are like. We live in Dallas, TX where it gets really hot during the Summer so we tend to stay indoors and not really go anywhere when it is over 100 degrees. The car just gets so hot and the kids get cranky so fast. If we do go out when it’s over 100 we do it in the morning so we are home by lunch before it gets super hot.

Don’t let the TV time fool you either because, truth, it is usually on all day in the background unless we are doing School work then it’s off. That or usually we are playing music stopping and dancing to the good songs. Harper loves our little dance parties.

Now that “summer is over” and school has started our morning starts earlier and I am still seeing what we will do since it will just be me and Nicolas. I have only been at this for 3 days now but I see this being our schedule.

School Year SAHM Routine

6:30 – 7:15 Wake Up get everyone dressed and eat breakfast

7:15 – 7:45 Brush teeth get shoes on and she can then watch TV until time to leave

7:45 – 8:30 Walk to school, school starts at 8:10 and me and Nicolas are usually back home by 8:30

8:30-9:15 Walk or work out at home, Nic plays

9:15 – 9:45 Play on floor with Nic

9:45 – 11ish Nic naps while I do Blog work, shower, clean up around the house, water the garden – ( Oh damn the sprinkler is still on!! Glad I just wrote that, one side of the yard just got a good watering)

11:30 – 12:15 Make lunch and clean up

12:15 – 2:00 Play around with Nic, fold laundry, maybe sit on the floor with Nic while catching up on one of my shows – just depends how clean the house is

2:00 – 3:00 Nic usually goes down for another nap, and wakes up right when we have to leave to get Harper

3:00 – 3:30 Get Harper from school and come back home

3:30 – 4: 30 Homework or snack then play sometimes run errand after school

4:30 – 5:30 TV time while I make dinner (if homework is done)

5:30 – 6:30 Eat dinner and clean kitchen, then pack lunches for next day

6:30 – 8:00 Family time, or bath night for the kids then play games or watch TV show or movie

8:00 – 8:10 Brush teeth then BEDTIME – Hallelujah

8:15 – 11:30pm-ish  FREEDOM then bedtime

Having a schedule helps us plan ahead of time. If we decide to go out anywhere I try to pack the night before. Everyone also seems to behave better when we stick to our schedule and bedtime routine is easy too, no begging to stay up, or at least very little.

What is your schedule like at home? Do you have a favorite outing you like to do each week? I would love to hear!
